Dave Gumble: my life in bits

  • Gary Chalk knows I use his artwork for my Avatar.
  • Jeroen Tel allows me to use one of his tracks for my  game.
  • I helped wallop Julian Gollop when playtesting his Chaos remake.
  • I know full well home much Dave Allsop loves Frank Sidebottom.
  • Jeff Minter once said hello to me while tending to his livestock.
  • Herman Serrano got me into Captain Beefheart: in fact his philosophy that 'even a bad film can contain a great sequence' has been a mantra for me ever since.
  • Game guru Chris Gibbs and I disagreed often, but we worked together well enough.
  • Alexander Nordgaren was my mentor and a calming influence during difficult development pushes.
  • Lyndon Mallet, published author #1, gave me an appreciation of second-hand bookshops.
  • Fergus McNeill, published author #2, gave me my first management gig - and dammit he knew Pratchett and his messy old home.
  • I have a published game character named after me: Gumbler.
  • I made Octavius Kitten into a Steam Achievement (not that she is aware of this - sssh.)
  • I offloaded a heap of dodgy Spectrum kit to Derek Findas - seems the time-machine can go both ways.
  • I bought RPGChick a copy of AtomRPG when her Fallout 2 died.
  • I featured my daughter's potty in an MJ Hibbett video.
  • I had to escort Mike Hanley from our work premises when fired.
  • I talked Star Wars with Michael Sheard, after he had enjoyed his third-or-so whiskey mac at GenCon.
  • I know the plot to all the Jane Austen books (they are fairly similar).
  • I enjoy arranging flowers: I even have a certificate in it.
  • I have backed Georg Rockall-Schmidt to make his indie film.
  • My wife got Professor Elemental's autograph: I only managed to back one of his videos.
  • I was the last to work alongside Alexander Ilic at Argonaut before the Christmas 2003 break, working on raindrops for Catwoman: he passed-away weeks later, at 30.
  • At Argonaut, I was on their games-idea committee: so many bad ideas were vetted and voted against - great fun!
  • I wrote 100,000 words of Harry Potter fan-fiction before the films were made.
  • I spent two years writing a Dungeon Master re-make on Steam: Doug Bell is aware it exists (not that he cares).
  • My mate Mark managed to get me a signed Pratchett book: I wish I'd queued up and met him, to say thankyou. The day he dies, I gave up drinking completely - in memory of old Vimes.
  • I managed to get beta-release versions of Malice to the Playstation Museum for their series. (I also leaked the Gwen Stefani audio files used in Malice... sssh.)
  • I almost appeared in Shaun of the Dead: 5 of us were down to go (Mark Coltman (RIP), Kev Clarke, Robin Jubber, Arash Mohebbi and me), they only wanted 3 on the day and of those, only 2 are visible in the movie (Kev is guy KO'd in car in background when Shaun meets Yvonne, Mark is concerned guy in lime-green suit looking in after ambulance turns up). I was last on the list so didn't go.
  • I was a mature student: I ended up going to university with my talented little sister - they treated it like some sort of social experiment. It's ok, we both survived.

Anyone can do interesting things. Everyone has similar stories to tell.
These are my stories.
All these moments, lost, like crumbs, down the back of the sofa. Time. To cry. ;).
